Existing aircraft like the Lisunov Li-2 (a license-build derivative of the Douglas DC-3) and Ilyushin Il-12 were small, slow, and outdated when compared to their western counterparts. Travelling across the vast expanses of the Soviet Union was measured in days due multiple refueling stops, and often unpredictable weather. By 1953 plans were underway to solve the Soviet Union's airliner shortfall, but one pioneering aircraft designer named Andrei Tupolev was committed to propelling Soviet civil aviation well into the future. By 1953, the British de Havilland Comet was beginning to prove itself in passenger service. It flew nearly twice as fast as the latest generation of piston powered airliners, and much higher. With its speed and ability to fly above most weather, the Comet was proving to be much more convenient and comfortable. Tupolev was convinced that jet power was exactly what the Soviet Union needed, but Soviet leadership was skeptical. Jet engines were relatively new and unproven. There were lingering questions about long-term reliability, fuel consumption, and whether the resources needed to retrain Soviet pilots could be justified. More modern piston airliners seemed to be a more sensible path forward. Realizing that Soviet leadership would be unwilling to commit significant time and resources required to develop a jet airliner like the de Havilland Comet, Tupolev proposed an alternative approach. Having just finished designing the jet-powered Tu-16 heavy bomber, Tupolev proposed converting the aircraft into an airliner. Doing so would save significant engineering time, allowing for the airliner to be introduced within just 3 years. It would also be far less expensive, as factories were already configured to manufacture Tu-16 components that could be reused on the airliner, like engines, wings, landing gear and avionics. The approach would allow the new jetliner to enter service in 1956 - years ahead of the Americans. It was an irresistible proposition, but like the British, the Soviets would pay a heavy price for being the first to introduce jet travel. Most of my collection is from the RMS Queen Mary (1934) and RMS Queen Elizabeth (1938). But it's possible some other items may be from other Cunard ships of the mid-century such as RMS Mauretania (1938), RMS Sylvania (1957), and RMS Caronia (1947). The oldest piece of the collection dates back to 1952, and the newest piece is from 1967...however the entire set is all the same Art Deco design introduced aboard the RMS Queen Mary in 1936 when it had its maiden voyage. The only thing that has changed between the pieces from the 30's and the 60's was the color changeover from ivory white, to eggshell white. HOW TO CARE FOR VINTAGE CHINA: always hand-wash in warm water with dish soap using the soft part of the sponge, never scrub with any abrasive, no matter how soft the abrasive is...because over time, even the softest abrasive can wear away at the glaze coating on the china. Store china in a protected place away from direct sunlight, and away from spaces where they can be damaged. When ready to use teapots, teacups, hot water pitchers or any other china vessel meant to hold hot liquids...remember to ALWAYS do a pre-warm up. NEVER pour extra hot, or boiling water into/onto china or the thermal shock WILL crack them! Helpful tip: if your china was made before the year 1975, it may have been made with lead, using china only on occasion, poses minimal risk of lead poisoning. But NEVER drink from cracked china that was produced before 1975 because the health risk increases. PREWARM STEP 1: Run the hot liquid vessels under the hottest tap water you have and fill the teapot, teacup, and other hot liquid vessels with hot tap water until your boiling water is ready. PREWARM STEP 2: When your boiling water is ready, pour out ONLY HALF of the hot tap water from the vessels, then top the rest off with the boiling water. Allow the china to sit for a minute to equalize in heat (the china may be too hot to touch at this point). STEP 3, THE TEA: Pour out all the pre-warming water from the teapot and fill it with boiling water and place your tea in for the designated amount of time. You may want to allow the boiling water to cool down to a particular temperature for certain teas. The teacup must keep its pre-warming water until the tea is finished brewing, then you can dump out the water, and pour in the tea!
